* Category/Purpose Definitions -
Coating Agent -
Coats the tablet protecting it from air and moisture decomposition. Aids in the desired release of substances, masks any unpleasant odors or tastes of ingredients, and offers aesthetic properties, i.e. gloss. Also acts as a smooth surface for tablet.
Cross-Linking Catalyst-
A component of film coating, to enhance spread of the tablet coat. (fluidity). It also reduces the need for high pressure used during manufacturing. Improves gloss of final product.
Emulsifying/Solubilizing-
Agent Mixing of two or more unblendable mixtures – improves its characteristics, making it more stable. End product may be liquid emulsion or semisolid emulsion.
Glidant/Anti-caking-
Acts as a lubricant to prevent ingredients from sticking to each other, improving flow properties of powder mixture.
Humectant-
Acts to attract and hold water, to prevent formulations from drying out.
Oil Transporter-
Acts as a carrier of active ingredients, with oily properties.
Sweetening Agent-
Act as sweeteners, to improve product taste in mouth.
Tablet Binder / Diluent-
Binders are often given a negative perception, being regarded as fillers. But these ingredients are necessary to bind and keep the product together (adhesion). They also acts as bulking agents, this is important so that a specific amount of active can be contained in the tablet.
Tablet Disintegrant-
Important excipient to ensure that the tablet breaks up into smaller particles when it comes into contact with fluid, making it more easily absorbed.
Tablet Lubricant-
Important excipient to ensure that any equipment coming in contact with the product remains lubricated for proper operation.
