Are glucosamine and calcium the same?

Glucosamine is not the same as calcium. Over the course of a lifetime, the normal wear and tear of living exacts a price on our bones and joints. As we age, we are increasingly vulnerable to osteoarthritis (OA), which often leads to debilitating pain and discomfort. »

I love your Power Vitamins™ for Men multivitamin. My wife, who is vegan, is also looking for a good multivitamin. The calcium content in Power suggests that it might be a suitable option, but she is shy about taking vitamins for men. Do you have a comparable product for women? Are there reasons why a woman could not take Power vitamins?
I love the Power formula. It’s the best I’ve found anywhere!

While it is safe for a woman to take the Power multivitamin, Jamieson makes Vita-Vim for Women, a premium women’s multivitamin formula with targeted nutrients to optimally support women’s health. »

My granddaughter has a serious Fallopian tube infection and is taking massive doses of antibiotics. I bought her Jamieson’s non-milk probiotic supplement, but have read that probiotics can cause problems in some illnesses. Now, I’m worried about the advice I gave her.

When it comes to an infection, probiotics (or “good” bacteria) should only help the issue. »

Can you please recommend which of your calcium products is most readily absorbed by the body and if the tablet must be taken on its own, without other medications? Most women I know take calcium with other supplements or prescribed meds. Are there any benefits to taking the calcium alone? Please advise.

Determining your needs is the first step to choosing the right supplement. Metabolic rates vary due to age, genetics, lifestyle and prior health issues. With calcium supplements, it is important that you determine the elemental calcium content, rather than the total content, before making a purchase. »

Can you please tell me if it's fine to take ginkgo biloba if I am already taking vitamins and Omega-3 supplements? How much can I take?

Do Jamieson Vitamin supplements contain soy, dairy or other protein products? I am asking because my wife is breast-feeding and our six-week-old child has a protein intolerance.  Eight months ago I had a baby, but I’m not losing the baby weight as fast as I would like. I’ve been exercising and eating well. What Jamieson products do you suggest I use to expedite my weight-loss program? I’ve read about Jamieson’s Slim Down® product line, but do not know which supplements to use.

The most effective weight-loss programs are long-term endeavours, involving new dietary habits, fitness regimes and lifestyle changes. It’s important to remember that there is no quick fix for permanent weight loss. Those who shed weight rapidly tend to experience the “yo-yo effect,” where weight fluctuates up and down. »

For Omega-3 supplements, why do you recommend taking some 1000s once a day and some three times a day? I realize that they have a different name, but the end result is still 1000 units.

We have a number of fatty-acid supplements to cater to a wide range of consumer needs. Although some Jamieson Omega-3 products use 1000 mg of fish oil, it is important to note that the DHA and EPA contents from the fish oils vary per product.»

For the last couple of months, I've been doubling the dosage of my Vitamin C. I'm 44-years-old and I've been taking two tablets of Vitamin C —1,000 mg each tablet— every morning and one tablet of Vitamin B —100 mg each tablet— every morning. A friend told me that it's harmful to take 2,000 mg of Vitamin C everyday because there is a risk of it causing kidney stones. How true is this and are the dosages of these vitamins I'm taking proper for my age?

In order to avoid any side effects, we advise that you follow the recommended dosage set by Health Canada for Vitamin C.»

I am a regular user of Jamieson Vitamins. Today, I purchased Niacin for the first time and read the warning before I bought it. I definitely felt the flushing and itchiness after 20 minutes and so my question is: Is this safe for me to continue taking or not? I am trying to get off statins (high cholesterol) and read about Niacin being just as good.

Most people experience initial flushing (>80%) within 20 minutes of ingestion and lasting up to an hour. The flushing response is typically transient and often spontaneously diminishes after one to two weeks of use.»

I saw that taking Vitamin B supplements gives you more energy and reduces stress. But there are eight kinds. Can you please tell me how to know which one to try? What is the diference between B50, B75 and B100? I am 47, reasonably active and in good health but am starting to realize that this body needs some help to keep up. Any suggestions?

I use your products daily, but have discovered that your 1,000 mg Timed-Release Vitamin C timed and your Magnesium 200 mg are almost identical in size, shape and colour. It's okay for me becaues I have good eyesight, but for my elderly friends, it's not goo. If they get interrupted in setting out their pills — is that a magnesium or Vitamin C I put out — they skip both for fear of doubling up. Would it be possible to add a drop of colouring to the stuff that holds it all together so that all the ones of similar shape would be easily recognized and people wouldn't get confused.

We want to thank you for your comments and assure you that your feedback will be documented and forwarded to the appropriate departments for further review and consideration.»

Jamieson is currently revising labels to include "no gluten" for all relevant products. If the warning is absent on the label, we urge you to contact us to double-check the contents.»

I've been reading about the benefits of taking high doses of pharmaceutical-grade fish oil (i.e., 5,000 mg or more of Omega-3 fatty acids per day). The label on your Omega-3 fish oil says that the consumer is not to exceed the recommended dosage of three capsules daily, which would yield just 1,500 mg of Omega-3 fatty acids daily. I've learned that if the product is truly pharmaceutical grade it should be safe to take in higher doses. Are the levels of contaminants in your product too high for it to be safe to take in higher doses? Also, I've read that the ratio of EPA to DHA should be at least 2:1 in order for EPA to be most effective. Is this so? If so, will you be coming out with a more concentrated Omega-3 product that meets this criterion (i.e., that has at least 400 mg. of EPA to 200 mg. of DHA)?

Jamieson fish-oil supplements are certified free of all impurities and safe to take at higher levels in accordance with the maximum dosage set by Health Canada, which is 3,000mg/day of total EPA plus DHA for adults.»

I have Type II diabetes. I took 750 mg of Metformin each day. My family doctor recommended that I not take glucosamine as it increases blood-sugar levels. I have purchased your Glucosamine and Chondroitin as it is made without sugar, starch, gluten or lactose. Is this product suitable for me? I take 4 mg of a blood-pressure medicine each day. I’m looking for a solution to ease the joint pain in my legs and lower back.

Glucosamine is an “amino sugar,” and it can have a mild to moderate effect on glucose levels. If you suffer from arthritis and your blood sugar is fairly controlled then the benefits of glucosamine (often combined with chondroitin) may outweigh the potential negative impact on your blood sugar.»

My wife is 12 weeks pregnant and she was advised to supplement with Omega -3 for fetal development and for her own health as well. She did some research and found out that some types of Omega-3 products are derived from fish liver, a type of retinol Vitamin A that has been linked to birth defects. Is your Omega Protect™ Omega-3 Select 1,000 mg product derived from liver oils or fish body oils?

All our Omega-3 fish oil supplements are derived from the body, not the liver. The supplements are also reviewed extensively by Health Canada for safety, quality and claims.»

I recently purchased a jar of Jamieson ProVitamina A Retinol Renewal Night Cream, but am concerned that it is past the expiry date. I no longer have the box, but the bottom of the jar shows #300028. Does this number help establish the product’s expiry date?

Unlike supplements and vitamins, which are taken internally, cosmetics do not require expiry dates under Canadian regulations.

Omega-3 essential fatty acids (EPA and DHA) from fish and fish oil offer several cardiovascular benefits, including lowered serum cholesterol, decreased serum triglycerides and reduction in blood pressure. »

I have used Vita-Vim Adult 50+ for more than a year and have been very happy with the product. Recently I purchased a bottle and the label information has changed since my last purchase. The Vitamin D content, usually 800 IU, is listed as 20 mcg. In looking at your website, I see that Adult 50 + still contains 800 IU of Vitamin D.  What is the reason for this difference?

The Vitamin D3 listed on the label as 20 mcg is equivalent to 800 IU.»

Hi. I am a teenage female and have had a calcium deficiency for most of my life. When I was seven, my aunt noticed white specks on my fingernails, which are an embarrassment still today. Since the age of 12, I’ve consumed three cups of 1% milk each day, plus other calcium-rich foods, such as tofu and fish. I am considering trying calcium supplements, but am unsure which type I should purchase.

Although you may benefit from extra calcium, I don’t believe that calcium deficiency is the cause of your concern. Random white spots on the nails are more likely due to a zinc deficiency or an injury to the nail bed. »

Also, can a person with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) use CoQ10 if she is not on any other medication?

I just purchased some Vitamin D made by your company — 100 tablets. I was shocked to see the waste in packaging. With so-called global warming and governments wanting to charge extra for garbage we put out at the curb, how can you justify selling a few tablets in bottle that can hold more than four times what it holds? You are contributing more than four times the necessary waste. Line four bottles up, multiply that by the amount you sell a year and you'll see the amount you are contributing to global warming — and that is only for vitamin D! Your company should be ashamed and possibly fined.

Thank you for contacting us with regards to your environmental concern. Please be assured that at this time, Jamieson is working to address the issue of bottle size. Due to a number of factors, one of which is customer demand, the bottle size for the product in question, as well as a number of other Jamieson products, was increased. This is in response to a number of complaints received regarding the print size on our label, which was felt by many of our consumers to be illegible.»

Why does Jamieson's Mega Cal contain magnesium? Does it enhance the absorption of calcium?

Calcium and magnesium work together in the body and mutually enhance absorption and utilization. The calcium-magnesium ratio should be 2:1 as found in Jamieson’s supplements, which helps prevent adverse gastrointestinal effects that can occur when these minerals are taken in equal proportions.
