Four Nutrition Trends to Watch in 2017

Every year, there’s a buzz about what’s new and hot in food and wellness. While some health trends are better soon forgotten, others have staying power and are worth jumping on the bandwagon for. Here are four nutrition and health trends everyone will be talking about in 2017 that are worth incorporating into your own routine.

TREND #1: Anti-inflammatory Warm Drinks

We’re not talking coffee here (although totally fine if that’s your thing!). This year, beverages high in natural anti-natural inflammatory ingredients like turmeric and ginger are going to be all the rage. And that’s a good thing. Inflammation in your body is linked to everything from skin problems and bloating to joint pain and chronic disease. If you want to replace your morning coffee with a new health elixir, try Golden Milk, a latte made with nut milk and the spice turmeric. Turmeric, a relative of ginger, is a perennial plant that grows in Southern Asia, and is the main spice in curry. Its main active ingredient is called curcumin, a yellow pigment that is isolated from the root of the plant.  

To make Golden Milk at home, heat one cup of nut milk (almond, cashew or coconut) in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in 2-3 tsp of honey and ½ tsp vanilla extract; remove from heat and pour into a blender. Add 1 tsp each of dried or chopped fresh turmeric and ginger, 2 tsp of coconut oil and a dash of cinnamon. Blend until frothy – then enjoy! 

TREND #2: Convenience, Re-defined

You may have caught yourself sharing those quick 30-second recipe videos circling around online, or even scrolling through the latest mobile app for a meal delivery service when you feel crunched for time. These are just a couple of the examples that show that this is the convenience food of the future.

Back in the day, “convenience” meant popping a frozen meal in the microwave for dinner, or grabbing a slice of pizza on the way home from work, but all of this came at the expense of healthy eating. In 2017, convenience has been elevated to a whole new level. It has now been completely redefined and means healthy and delicious recipes you can make in minutes, meals you can make in batches for the whole week, and if you’re really pressed for time, healthy, organic ingredients you can get delivered straight to your doorstep. There’s no doubt that there are plenty of ways to eat healthy despite the time crunch that most of us face.

However, even with the vast improvement in healthy choices available when time is a factor, there may still be some days when your diet falls short. TREND #3: Digestive Health Goes Mainstream

Once a bit of a taboo topic, now everyone is talking about digestive health. Research and knowledge about the digestive system’s role in overall health has exploded in recent years, and foods that fuel your gut are a popular topic of discussion on the health scene.

Probiotics are healthy bacteria that live in your digestive tract, preventing infection and also keeping your immune system strong. While yogurt with “live active cultures” has long been known to be a source of probiotics, we’re now seeing a shift towards fermented foods, both in home preparation and on grocery store shelves as a way to get more of these “good bugs”. Fermentation is an ancient food preservation technique that has long been used to increase the shelf life and flavour of certain foods. Well-known fermented foods such as kombucha, kimchi, miso, sauerkraut, pickled vegetables, and kefir are naturally rich in probiotics and are now being more widely consumed as a result. Keep an eye out on restaurant menus and in your local grocery store for more of these unique-tasting foods that can do wonders for your digestive health. TREND #4: Move over Meat, Plant Protein is Here

It started off with “Meatless Mondays”, but it looks like plant protein is here to stay. Gone are the days when we got all of our dietary protein from meat, fish, poultry and dairy – now we’re seeing plant protein popping up not only in snacks and sides but also as the main entrée on our dinner plates. Think hemp proteins in smoothie powders and bars, non-dairy beverages (almond milk, cashew milk), nuts and tofu, as well as salads, soups and main dishes incorporating pulses (beans, peas, chickpeas and lentils). This is one trend that’s easy to adopt in your own kitchen and cost-effective too. 

The plant-based eating trend really seems to resonate with people because the foods are not only healthy for you, but they also matter to those who care about sustainability and animal welfare. With plant-based eating, you have a dietary pattern that’s not only good for you, but good for the planet. Let’s hope this is one trend that stays.
