5 tips for a healthy summer

The weather is getting warmer, days are longer, and the official first day of summer is just around the corner.  Here are our top 5 tips to help you and your families stay healthy this summer.

Some of the most refreshing and tastiest foods are in season during the summer, and are bursting with flavour and nutrients. Vegetables such as beets, bell peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, green beans, tomatoes and asparagus can be prepared in a variety of ways and in many colourful salads and side dishes, some of which are best even eaten raw. Eating fruits with high water content, such as watermelon and strawberries is a juicy way to help stay hydrated. Dark pigment fruits such as berries and cherries are super foods packed with antioxidants and make a great summer snack on a hot day.

Unprotected skin can burn within 15 minutes when exposed to the sun—and with each sunburn, you’ve increased your risk of developing skin cancer. Sunburn can also cause sun damage, which can result in wrinkles, aging, and reduced immunity. Make sure you keep skin protected with a waterproof and sweat-proof high-SPF sunblock at all times. This includes less sunny days, as the UV rays can penetrate through the clouds. It’s also important to reapply sunscreen after swimming and heavy sweating and after every few hours.

Summers are short in Canada, so try to take advantage of the few months of summer we have. Outdoor activities such as walking, hiking, gardening and even camping are a great way to stay active.  Some activities such as gardening have been shown to be a great stress reliever in addition to keeping the body moving. This also offers an opportunity to not only switch up your workout routine, but many of these activities can also be enjoyed by spending additional time with the family or your own “me time”.

When enjoying outdoor fun, it’s easy to forget to drink water and become dehydrated by losing fluids through perspiration. Dehydration lowers muscle performance, increases the likelihood of cramps, dizziness and nausea, and, in extreme cases, can lead to heat stroke or exhaustion.  Keep water on hand to not only beat the heat, but also to ensure you’re staying hydrated. It’s important to support your body as the summer brings increased physical activity, heat and travel plans. Consider adding these three supplements to your routine. Vitamin B Complex helps to provide fuel for the body while decreasing the effects of stress. Vitamin C to help maintain healthy skin, promote wound healing and reduce the effects of free radicals on the body. And lastly, Jamieson BodyGUARD™ Sport contains a patented ingredient called UC-II ®collagen, which helps the body to relieve sore joints, maintain cartilage and increase mobility so you can keep doing the outdoor activities you enjoy most.
