The ABCs of vitamin D

We need 15 minutes of unprotected exposure to the sun daily from May to September in order to get the necessary amount of vitamin D to last us through the winter. But working indoors and the fear of sunburns have left many Canadians unable to get the vitamin D they need and to store it. And during the winter, the northern latitude and proximity to the sun prevent vitamin D-soaked UVB rays from reaching Canada so Canadians are unable to produce and absorb vitamin D.

Why is vitamin D so important?

Vitamin D has long been known as the vitamin that helps the body absorb and use calcium for developing and maintaining strong bones and teeth. But emerging research shows it also helps support the immune system, regulate insulin levels, and reduce the risk of diabetes, dementia, certain cancers and multiple sclerosis. If that weren’t reason enough to make sure you get sufficient vitamin D, during cold and flu season vitamin D can help enhance immunity, as it has been shown to boost the immune system’s cells that help fight foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. So it’s safe to say that maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D throughout the year can help ensure you obtain the benefits that vitamin D has been shown to offer.

How much vitamin D do I need?

Health Canada suggests that Canadians between the ages of 9 to 70 receive 600 IU of vitamin D per day, while the Canadian Cancer Society recommends 1,000 IU per day.
