Toronto, Ontario (January 9, 2013) — Nearly one-quarter of Canada’s adult population suffers from sleep disturbances. More than an issue of tossing and turning the night away, disrupted sleep also inhibits many of the body’s restorative processes, and it is now considered a factor in preventing weight loss, says Penny Kendall-Reed (ND), director of Toronto’s Urban Wellness Clinic. “The need for a good night’s sleep should be a priority for everyone as we set goals for a new year," she explains.
Melatonin, a natural hormone released by the pineal gland deep within the brain, regulates our wake-sleep cycle. Over a one-month period, Kendall-Reed’s study1 followed 25 healthy participants (men and women ages 25 to 65) with various degrees of sleep disturbance. The participants took Jamieson Melatonin 10 mg Dual Action for four weeks and reported the effects of melatonin supplementation on their sleep habits through a questionnaire they completed at the start, mid-point and end of four weeks.
“The overall improvement in each participant’s ability to fall asleep, the quality of their sleep, and their sense of mood, energy and mental clarity was remarkable,” notes Kendall-Reed. “These improvements were evident within the first two weeks of supplementation with Jamieson Melatonin 10 mg Dual Action.” Among the findings, study participants reported on average a 103% improvement in sleep quality and 140% increase in the ability to fall back asleep after waking during the night.
The first 10 mg melatonin product on the Canadian market, Jamieson’s time-released formula was designed and developed at the company’s laboratory in Windsor, Ontario. “The innovation in caplet structure is a Canadian success story,” explains Gary Leong, Vice President of Technology & Scientific Affairs. “We created a delivery system that takes effect in two stages. The first layer dissolves to help you fall asleep, and the second layer slowly releases additional melatonin to ensure a full night of sleep.” Jamieson Melatonin 10 mg Dual Action, therefore, meets the unique needs of people who suffer from sleep disturbance.
Crucial to achieving Stage 4 Delta Wave healing sleep, melatonin also supports the immune system and is important for overall health by promoting healthy sleep patterns. More recently, this has been shown to have a regulatory effect on blood sugar and the body’s ability to burn fat as fuel.2,3,4 “In the absence of adequate deep sleep, the body also fails to secrete leptin, the hormone that controls food cravings and the feeling of satiety that comes with eating,” adds Kendall-Reed. Equally important, melatonin helps regulate the body’s release of cortisol, the main stress hormone that causes feelings of irritability and emotional overload.
“With so many North Americans producing too much cortisol due to stress and, therefore, not getting enough sleep, melatonin is essential for the health of our brains and bodies.” Kendall-Reed concludes.
Jamieson Melatonin 10 mg Dual Action is sold across Canada at leading food and drug retailers. MSRP is $11.99 for 60 caplets.
