In response to recent negative publicity regarding vitamin supplements, Jamieson Laboratories would like to take this opportunity to provide important information to all consumers and health practitioners.
The antioxidant review circulated on Wednesday by its authors, The Cochrane Collaboration, is not new. It is a second-generation reprint of a highly flawed April 2007 study that first appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association. From the outset, however, this review aimed at confirming its own assumptions about supplementation and mortality.
Below, some key errors in the design and interpretation of the report:
• Some 750 studies on supplements are available for analysis, yet the scientists hand-picked only 67, a number that is neither comprehensive nor scientific; • The review ignored any studies that showed beneficial health results from using supplements; • The review did not correct for serious pre-existing health conditions; • Vitamin A and herbals were incorrectly identified as antioxidants; and • No statistical correction was made for excessive, non-recommended supplement use.
The fundamental question — Do antioxidants extend life? — cannot be answered by this study as it has been designed.
Jamieson Laboratories is Canada’s leading manufacturer of premium nutritional supplements. Supplements are only one factor in overall health.
At Jamieson, we believe in the responsible use of nutrient supplementation based on sound science and the advice of health-care professionals. We encourage all Canadians to be informed about how they can achieve optimal health and vitality.
