With every passing year comes a range of new trends to keep up with. And while it’s true that these trends are often just that—passing fads that last about as long as a common cold—plenty of innovations have the potential to stick with us. In 2019, we can expect a new set of fun and effective methods and products to keep you healthy. To help you sort through them, we’re outlining some of the biggest ones to keep eye on in the new year.
Aside from their great taste and versatility, mushrooms are wonderfully useful, containing many positive health properties. Of course, it’s important to distinguish between the fungi’s different varieties, but the right breed can have fantastic effects, from antioxidant immunity boosting properties to positive impacts on brain health.
People often associate fasting with religious or cultural practices, but its impact can be more than spiritual. Over the years, the benefits to both the mind and body have made fasting more popular than ever. There are different ways to fast, but some of the more popular forms include intermittent fasting, requiring you to limit your food intake to certain hours during the day, often between noon and 8 p.m. And the results are promising—intermittent fasting has been shown to reduce appetite, regulate blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as quell bad habits like nighttime snacking.
While they seem like something out of science fiction, isolation tanks, also called “sensory-deprivation tanks,” are more than a futuristic pipe dream. Here’s how these float tanks work: the water is warmed to 98º, the same as your body’s internal temperature, and filled with up to a half-ton of Epsom-salted water to ensure that you float. You’re generally meant to spend about an hour here, enclosed in total darkness, absent of sound and sight, and the results can range from clear-mindedness to pain relief. These tanks have also been used to treat anxiety, help athletes recover, and give relief to people dealing with stress. It’s meditative and relaxing, if not at first a little unnerving.
Acroyoga is, as you might have guessed, a hybrid. A mix of yoga, acrobatics, and Thai massage, it’s a high-energy partner-based workout that relies heavily on lifts and the healing properties of Thai massage’s pressure points. It’s not the easiest way to work out, but with the right training, it can be incredibly rewarding. Just don’t try it without professional assistance from one of the many Acroyoga studios that are springing up throughout North America.
Rowing for cardio
Cardio trends come and go. While ellipticals, treadmills, and exercise bikes have long been the champions, a new challenger is quickly catching up: the rowing machine. CrossFit has certainly been a boon to rowing’s popularity, thanks to its incorporation of the “Concept 2” rower, but the rower’s reputation as both a cardio exercise and a full-body workout has helped it skyrocket in popularity. As a plus, rowing machines also tend to be easier to store for anyone with a home gym.
Anti-aging for the brain
The anti-aging industry is valued at hundreds of billions of dollars but ask anyone what springs to mind when they think of it and they’ll likely mention cosmetics. In 2019, expect the industry to continue growing, only with a twist. Anti-aging efforts to keep the brain young are more popular than ever, and with good reason. This coming year, expect a mix of supplements and vitamins (like omega-3s or a zinc supplements) and brain exercises, like those found in cognitive apps, to spike in popularity.
Real life ninja exercises
There was a time when people thought parkour was the next big thing. That didn’t exactly hold true, but the remnants remain and have evolved into what some have dubbed “ninja” training. This involves exercising in obstacle-based gyms that focus on real-world scenarios—like climbing and jumping—over machine-based movements. These workouts are largely bodyweight based, and they’re closely related to gymnastics.
Adventure-racing obstacle courses
Running a marathon is an incredibly satisfying athletic feat, and it’s often a great way to exercise while also raising money for a good cause. But if you’re looking for a race with a twist, you’re in luck: adventure racing has never been more popular. Because why run, and only run, when you can jump, swing, swim, and slog through the mud? It’s more fun than it sounds, and the sense of accomplishment after you’ve finished an event, whether it’s the Spartan Race, Tough Mudder, or any of their counterparts that have launched in the past couple of years, is second to none.
The more we study sleep, the more we realize its importance. As a society, we’re busier than ever, making a deep sleep even more valuable. While the verdict is still out on how much, or how little, you should be sleeping, this emerging trend places an emphasis on quality over quantity. Through a combination of digital detoxing (and blue light filters), meditation, and supplements like melatonin, finding a deeper sleep is one trend we can expect to grow through the next year and beyond.
