It’s the most wonderful time of the year! This season is full of fun, food and friends! One that we wait for year round, it means parties, dinners, and catching up with those closest to us. But you know the saying: people are either born hosts or guests. Most of us fall into the latter. Though coming empty handed is out of the question, what to bring can be a head-scratcher. When it comes to host gifts, simplicity is key. If you’re anything like us-that means skipping straight to what’s top of mind: wine. It can be easy to default to items that may not fare well for many people’s diets, or even appeal to their tastes. Some may be high in fats, high in sugar, or just high in things they don’t often enjoy. This season, we challenge you to fill the gaps and get something your host (or hostess) will really love you for. We’ve gathered a list of some of the things you could bring to thank your “hostess with the mostest”!
With the hubbub around the turkey dinner, our next-day-breakfast needs have a tendency to fall by the wayside. As a guest, this is your time to shine! Infuse a little “fresh” into their holiday rituals with a healthy morning meal! To try and compensate for the previous night’s meal, we suggest opting for foods that aid in digestion like yogurt, fruits and oatmeal, as well as foods high in healthy fats, like avocado toast, or even smoothie jars with a dollop of almond butter.
A great addition to any meal, appetizers are an easy way to help your host entertain. Running short on ideas? This beet and goat cheese dip adapted from Brittany Powell could do the trick. It’s easy, delicious and healthy to boot!
- 3 large beets, trimmed
- 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar
- 8 ounces of goat cheese
- 1 teaspoon of lemon pepper
- salt and pepper to taste
To begin, bring a large pot of water to a boil. Once bubbling, add beets. To prevent bleeding, reduce heat and leave to simmer for 45 minutes. Once they are cool, touch to test for tenderness, and then cut off tops and bottoms. Afterwards, rub the skin off with your fingers. Dice into medium chunks.
Add beets and remaining ingredients into food processor. Add additional salt and pepper to taste.
This dip can be served with veggies, crackers or pita chips!
If you want to be sure your host loves you, bring them a tower of take- away containers. To keep the environment top of mind, glass or cardboard is best. This ensures they can divvy up the leftovers with their guests and won’t have holiday food taking up real estate in the fridge for longer than necessary.
A great way to finish any meal, tea is both hydrating and high in antioxidants. Some teas are also great for digestion. Green tea in particular contains a decent amount of polyphenols, to which cathechins are included. Studies have shown that these increase the activity of the digestive enzyme responsible for breaking proteins down in your stomach. This could surely come in handy after a hardy meal.
The most forgotten about menu item is most often the healthiest! If you’re looking to give your host a hand, bring a pre-prepared salad to the party. This means making sure that all of the items are in place to alleviate the load from your already stressed host. A pomegranate salad may do the trick! Just make sure to package each component separately (greens, dressing, fruit, etc.) and to package each of them in leak-proof jars or bags.
Although we can’t actually hand someone a jolt of energy, there are still a few ways you can make the effort. This one may seem out of the ordinary, but with all of the planning and laborious lugging involved in pulling off the perfect meal, one thing is for sure: your host is pooped!
