Coconut Kefir Smoothie

Apr 15, 2019

Smoothies are excellent beverages for many reasons. They can pack a nutritious punch to help give you energy, and their versatility allows for a tasty snack. Aside from your average fruit and veggies, try giving your next smoothie a new combination using kefir.

If you haven’t heard of kefir yet, it’s a fermented beverage that contains plenty of good bacteria to help boost digestive health. Kefir is made by first using yeast and lactic acid grains (known as kefir grains), which are then fermented with milk—either cow’s milk or a milk alternative. Fermented beverages have been shown to be an excellent source of probiotics, so this smoothie will give your taste buds and tummy a treat.

Coconut Kefir Smoothie Recipe

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup of live milk kefir grains; or premade kefir
  • 1 litre of coconut milk
  • 1 cup of fresh berries
  • Garnish of your preference

To get started, make your live milk kefir grains.

To make homemade kefir, you’ll need to source kefir grains, which can be purchased at any health food store or even online. Add them to coconut milk (or a milk of your choice) and leave overnight or up to 7 days to ferment. If you can’t find kefir grains, you can also buy premade kefir, which is sold as a milky beverage.

Once your kefir grains have fermented, strain the kefir grains from the milk and set the milk aside.

Now for the smoothie...

In a blender, blend the kefir, 1 cup of fresh berries and 1 litre of fermented coconut milk. Garnish with a fruit or mint, and enjoy!
