What is magnesium?

An essential mineral involved in hundreds of processes throughout the body.³

What does magnesium support?

Normal muscle function, bone health, energy metabolism, and the body’s ability to metabolize nutrients.¹

Where is magnesium found?

Foods such as legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and leafy green vegetables contain magnesium.³

Are all magnesium supplements the same?

No. They can differ by magnesium form, elemental amount, format, and additional ingredients.

What is magnesium?

Magnesium is an essential mineral found throughout the body. It is naturally present in many foods and is also available in supplements. Your body needs magnesium for normal muscle and nerve function, energy production, bone development, and many other everyday processes.¹˒³

Because the body cannot produce magnesium, it must come from food, supplements, or a combination of both.

How does your body use magnesium?

Magnesium helps enzymes carry out hundreds of reactions in the body. It contributes to energy metabolism, supports normal muscle function, and helps maintain bones and teeth. It also plays a role in nerve function and in processes that regulate muscle contraction and relaxation.¹˒³

The body stores more than half of its magnesium in the bones, while the rest is found mainly in muscles and other soft tissues.³

Which health goals can magnesium support?

Muscle Health

Magnesium helps maintain normal muscle function. It plays a role in the processes that allow muscles to contract and relax.¹˒³

Bone Health

Magnesium helps in the development and maintenance of bones and teeth. Much of the magnesium in the body is stored in bone tissue.¹˒³

Energy Support

Magnesium helps the body metabolize nutrients and convert the food you eat into energy.¹

Everyday Wellness

Magnesium supports several essential processes in the body, including normal nerve and muscle function and the maintenance of overall health.¹˒³

How can you add magnesium to your routine?

Magnesium can come from food, supplements, or both.

  • Build balanced meals: Include magnesium-rich foods such as nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, and leafy green vegetables.³
  • Choose a consistent time: If you use a supplement, take it according to the product label at a time that works with your routine.
  • Check your other supplements: Multivitamins and combination formulas may already contain magnesium.
  • Pay attention to comfort: Some forms and amounts of supplemental magnesium may cause digestive discomfort.³

*It is important to consult your trusted healthcare practitioner before adding any new natural health supplement to your routine.

What should you look for in a magnesium supplement?

Start with what you need, then choose a product that fits your life.

  • Know your goal: Consider whether you want support for muscles, bones, energy metabolism, or everyday wellness.
  • Check the form: Magnesium is available in forms such as bisglycinate, citrate, oxide, and L-threonate.
  • Look at the elemental amount: The label should tell you how much magnesium the product provides.
  • Review the full formula: Decide whether you want pure magnesium or a blend with ingredients such as vitamin D, calcium, melatonin, or ashwagandha.
  • Choose a practical format: Consider capsules, caplets, gummies, powders, and other formats that work for you.
  • Look for quality: Choose a licensed natural health product with an eight-digit NPN and clear information about quality and testing.

FAQs

How much magnesium do adults need each day?

Recommended amounts vary by age, sex, and life stage. For adults, the recommended dietary allowance is generally 400–420 mg per day for men and 310–320 mg per day for women. Requirements differ during pregnancy and for younger age groups.²

What does “elemental magnesium” mean?

Elemental magnesium is the amount of magnesium the supplement provides. The complete magnesium compound weighs more because it also includes the substance bound to the magnesium. Check the label for the amount of magnesium supplied per serving.⁴

Can magnesium supplements affect digestion?

Yes. Higher amounts of supplemental magnesium can cause diarrhea, nausea, or abdominal cramping in some people. Follow the product label and speak with a healthcare practitioner if you have concerns.³
